Joseph has been difficult to track down, but we now believe we have the correct man. He was born in 1890, the eldest son of William and Lizzie Baker in Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire. His father died in 1910 and his mother later remarried.

The 1911 census records his occupation as Assistant Schoolmaster. We know he became a Mathematics master at Alleyne’s Grammar School Uttoxeter, has recorded in his obituary in the Banbury Advertiser of 28th Nov 1918. A J. F. Baker is mentioned in the schools history.

Joseph appears to have joined up in 1916. He was wounded near St. Quentin on 18th Sept 1918 and he was brought back to Somerville Hospital, Oxford. Unfortunately he did not recover and died on 16th November.

As well as the Uttoxeter town war memorial he is commemorated on the Alleyne’s school memorial, unfortunately is initials are given as T F not J F.

Joseph is buried in Middleton Cheney All Saints churchyard his grave is south of the church.
