In 1901 he was living with his parents and three siblings (Charles, David and Frederick) at Tutbury, Staffordshire.[4a]

The fact that he was serving with the 8th battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment tells us that he was one of Kitchener’s volunteers[3]. He first went to the Western Front on 14th July 19156, so he will have taken part in the Battle of Loos. Many local men lost their lives in this battle.

William has no known grave and, as he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial for the Missing of the Somme, we can conclude that he died at some stage during the battle of the Somme.
