We have been unable to find out very much about Sydney. He does not appear to be represented in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s database, nor can we find him in the Soldiers Died in the Great War database. Ths probably means that he died after the war from wounds or illness caused by this war service.

All that we know is that at the end of March 1918 it was reported in the Uttoxeter Advertiser that he was from Carter Street, was serving as a Private, had been gassed in France and was now in hospital1a.

The National Archives contain the Pension Records for  a Sydney Thomas Capewell who could be our man, as the rank (Private2a), name and middle initial all match and he came from the ‘Potteries’2a. He died in 1922, which would explain why our Sydney Capewell does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or Soldiers Died in the Great War databases. Unfortunately, his address is given as 54 South Street, Ashbourne2c and his birth place as Blythe Bridge2c. He enlisted on 13th April 19172c, which is at variance with the Uttoxeter Advertiser article1a. Unless there were two Sidney or Sydney Capewells, it makes it unlikely that this was our man.

The details below relate to this man:

He served as a Private, number 59234, and was discharged from the army.
