We know very little about Joe Craddock.
The only significant reference we have found for Joe Craddock is in a brief article in the Uttoxeter Advertiser on 16th October 1918[1b]. This said that Private John Fallows, of 119 Mount Pleasant, Uttoxeter and serving in the West Riding Regiment, had written to his parents. In this letter he mentioned that whilst on the march he had seen the grave of Private Joe Craddock, of Uttoxeter, who was killed in July 1916.
The only other reference is in an article in the Uttoxeter Advertiser in August 1914[1a], which said that J. Craddock had left Uttoxeter for Luton with other Uttoxeter men. This would make him one of the ‘Old Contemptibles’.
The only Jo[seph] Craddock in the Staffordshire Soldiers of the Great War has the wrong date of death, which is puzzling. This needs further investigation.
