He is not included on any of the town’s memorials, but he is mentioned in the Uttoxeter Advertiser[1] of the time. We know little about him, and what we do know has all come from the brief mention in the Uttoxeter Advertiser[1].In April 1917 his wife receive official notification that he had been killed[1]. He had been missing since the 1st of July 1916[1].
With information being so scanty, it is proving difficult to identify him in the Soldiers (or Officers) Died in the Great War databases.
The SDGW database lists 32 Evans who died on the 1st of July 1916. None contain any information that link them directly back to Uttoxeter.
The Officers Died in the Great War database lists 3 Evans who died on the 1st of July 1916. Again, none contain any information that link them directly back to Uttoxeter.
The most likely seems to be Charles Wilmot Evans, because he was in the South Staffordshire Regiment. However, he had a Military Cross and if he had been a Uttoxeter man we would have expected his decoration to have been mentioned in the Uttoxeter Advertiser. To date, we have been unable to find any reference to it.
