He died at Gommecourt Wood on the first day of the Somme battle on the 1st of July 1916. At the time of his death he was reported missing and his parents had to wait over twelve months, until April 1917, to receive official confirmation of his death.

He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
