His mother was Mary Ann Hayes2 of 57, Stone Rd., Uttoxeter, Staffs2.

Before the war he was a fitter at the Leighton Ironworks, the precursor of the modern JCB.

These are all that remain of the original Leighton Ironworks in Uttoxeter. These factory buildings will have been familiar to Thomas and his colleagues.

Thomas was a member of the local Territorial company6b when war broke out. He played regularly for the Territorial Football Club before the war6b.

He was one of the first men to leave Uttoxeter shortly after war broke out in August 19146a, 8 and first went to the Western Front on 5th March 19157,.

He took part in the charge on the Hohenzollern Redoubt on the 13th of October 19158, where he received a gunshot wound in his right thigh6b. This is confirmed by an entry in the regimental records1 which say that he was wounded on the 13th October 1915.

After recovering from his wounds hereturned to the front and was wounded again in May 1916. He had a short leave in Uttoxeter and then returned to service during the first week of June 19168.

The Uttoxeter Advertiser reported that he was missing in the middle of July 19166e. It said that he had not been seen after the fighting of the first day of the battle of the Somme on the 1st July6f.

His regimental records1 confirm that he went missing on the 1st July 1916 and died of illness on or since that date.

The Uttoxeter Advertiser Roll of honour says that he died at Gommecourt Wood.

He left a sweetheart (Edie)6g, 6h., who was his fiancée6i.

He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

The Thiepval Memorial
