Before the war he was a postman in Stafford4a.

He was also a prominent Boy Scout3a and was well known in the town4a. Both he and his brother Douglas acted as buglers in the Uttoxeter troop4a.

He joined the army when he was just 18 years old4a , which means that he enlisted in 1915.   This is borne out by the fact that in February 1916 the Uttoxeter Advertiser4b published a list of soldiers who had sent grateful acknowledgements for Christmas parcels that had been sent by the townspeople. At this time he was listed as Drummer JW Higson.By the time he was killed he had served for three years4a. Of these three years, one had been in France4a.

Douglas, his brother, also served in the army4a and survived the war.
