Martin joined the North Staffords a few days after war was declared4band went through the Irish Rebellion before going to France4b.

In January 1917 he spent a period of leave at home before returning to the front1.

A friend (Corporal Dale) wrote the following from the front4b:

  “Martin played havoc amongst the enemy with his Lewis gun, and his death was instantaneous. He was buried with his pals in the English Cemetery just behind the firing line.. He was a 'true Britisher to the very last' and was just about to take up a commission”.
