Robert Knight was the youngest of 3 sons serving in the forces and their father was a munitions worker[1a, 1b].

He was a quiet, unassuming lad who joined the army in July 1915[1b]. Before the war he worked in the electrical department[3] of the North Staffordshire Railway[1b, 3].

He enlisted in the 3rd North Staffordshire Regiment, but while abroad was transferred to the Worcestershire Regiment[1b].

His early training with the Uttoxeter Volunteers quickly earned him the commendation of his officers[1a] and he had only been in training for 3 months when he was selected for active service[1b].

He went to the Dardanelles and Egypt[1a, 1b], before being sent to the Persian Gulf[1b].

We do know that on the 17th May 1917, the Uttoxeter Advertiser reported that he was lying dangerously ill in Mesopotamia[1a, 3] and that, unbeknown to his family he died the next day[1a]. We do not know how long he had been in hospital before his death, but we do know that he died of enteric fever[1b].

By this time his brothers, Sergeant Harry Knight And Frank Knight were serving with the Royal Flying Corps[1a, 1b]. A fourth brother, Walter, was under military age in May 1916 and was serving with the Uttoxeter Volunteer Force[1a, 1b].

This notice was posted in the Uttoxeter Advertiser in May 1917 to mark the first anniversary of his death

KNIGHT. – In Loving Memory of Lance-Corpl. R. B. Knight (Bobbie), of the North Stafford Regiment, the beloved son of Mr. And Mrs. Knight, of Cheadle Road, Uttoxeter, who died at Basra Hospital, Mesopotamia, May 18, 1916.

In a far distant land though his body may rest,

Far from home and the ones he loved best,

Still deep in our hearts his memory we keep;

Sweet is the place where he now lies asleep.

- From his Loving Father, Mother, Soldier Brothers and Sister Lillie.
