His name is incorrectly recorded on the town war memorial as Bernard Arthur Smith Knight.
He was educated at Uppington, where he was a school praeposter, captain of his house, and captain of the running eight, being a fine long-distance runner.
He received his commission in September 1914 and joined his regiment in readiness for going to France during the last week of July 1915.
On the day of his death he was out on a listening patrol alongside another man when he was hit. The other man fetched help and two officers brought the two of them back to our lines, but he only lived at most for another half an hour.
He was very highly thought of by everyone he knew. His soldier servant wrote to his parents: 'I feel his loss personally, for he was not only an officer to me - he was more like a brother.' The chaplain said 'a more lovable young officer I have never met, and he was equally well-liked by officers and men.'.
He died at Laventie.
