On 23rd August 1916 it was reported in the Uttoxeter Advertiser that Cecil had been wounded in the recent fighting in France[3a].This will, of course, have been during the battle of the Somme. Unfortunately, he had already been dead for nearly a month  by the time this report came out.

We know nothing about the circumstances of his death, but he is now one of the missing listed on the Thiepval Memorial

His brother, Pte. Lionel Lineker, also served[CWGC, 2]. With the West Kent Regiment[3a]. He had been taken prisoner while serving with General Townsend’s force in Mesopotamia (now Iraq)[3a] by the 23rd August 1916.
