The 1901 Census shows Harold as living at home with his parents, John and Catherine, and brother George¹.

John Austin, his nephew, was also residing with them during the night of the Census¹.

Before the war, Harold was employed by the While Hart Hotel in Uttoxeter^2a before moving to Blackburn^2a. We do not know what he did in Blackburn or in what capacity he was employed by the White Hart Hotel.

A short while before his death Harold had been in hospital suffering from severe shell-shock^{2a, 7} and he had only been back in the line a short time when he was killed^{2a, 7}. We can only try to imagine how he must have felt on his journey back to the front line after spending time in hospital with severe shell shock.
