The 1901 Census shows Harold as living at home with his parents, John and Catherine, and brother George1.
John Austin, his nephew, was also residing with them during the night of the Census1.
Before the war, Harold was employed by the While Hart Hotel in Uttoxeter2a before moving to Blackburn2a. We do not know what he did in Blackburn or in what capacity he was employed by the White Hart Hotel.
A short while before his death Harold had been in hospital suffering from severe shell-shock2a, 7 and he had only been back in the line a short time when he was killed2a, 7. We can only try to imagine how he must have felt on his journey back to the front line after spending time in hospital with severe shell shock.
In a cruel irony, he was killed barely a month before the end of the war.
