Before the war William was single and lived with relatives in Carter Street .

Carter Street, Uttoxeter, where the family lived

He was a baker1a, having been employed in Uttoxeter by Mr. C.H. Elkes1a, the Co-Operative Society1a and Mr. Parker1a.

He reported for duty on 10th August 19176and  was admitted to hospital with tuberculosis in his lungs within two or three days of arriving at Whittington Barracks1a. He died in the Military Hospital in Lichfield just thirteen days after reporting for service.

His obituary in the Uttoxeter Advertiser1a stated that he was never a robust man. It does beg the question, how did he pass the Army entrance-medical if he was evidently as ill as he was?

Sergeant-Major G.S. Woolley and nine members of the Uttoxeter Volunteer Force attended his funeral1a; the service was conducted by the Rev. W. H. Whiting1a.

His grave is in Uttoxeter Cemetery:
