Arthur’s name does not appear on any of Uttoxeter’s War Memorials, but he was born in Uttoxeter and we therefore feel that he belongs amongst Uttoxeter’s fallen.

His Medal Card⁵ tells us that he was a member of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914. This made him one of that special set of men known as the Old Contemptibles. He first went to France on 4^th November 1914⁵.Arthur served all through 1915 and the first half of 1916 - he died in Delville Wood on 7^th August 1916, a month into the battle of the Somme.
