Arthur’s name does not appear on any of Uttoxeter’s War Memorials, but he was born in Uttoxeter and we therefore feel that he belongs amongst Uttoxeter’s fallen.
His Medal Card5 tells us that he was a member of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914. This made him one of that special set of men known as the Old Contemptibles. He first went to France on 4th November 19145.Arthur served all through 1915 and the first half of 1916 - he died in Delville Wood on 7th August 1916, a month into the battle of the Somme.
Arthur is buried in the cemetery which lies opposite the entrance to Delville Wood. |
