Sidney was the sixth son in the family. He was a brother of Mrs. Ernest Manners of Burton-on-Trent. [2 & 5] He also had a brother, Walter Kendrick Meakin, who was also killed in the war. [3] See the end of this article for further details about Walter.

He was well-known in Burton in connection with the firm of Maltsters bearing the name Meakin. [5]

Before the war he was on the special reserve of officers of the 4th North Staffordshire Regiment, so he was called-up on the outbreak of war [2a & 3] and attached to the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment. [5]

He was killed in action near Armentieres; shot by a German sniper. [5, 7]

Shortly after his death, Private James Horne of the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment wrote to a friend at Stone, saying [7]

“We are only 30 yards from the German trenches, and they shout for a Woodbine, and we shout ‘Come and fetch it’, but they won’t. We are having a few casualties. One is Lieutenant Meakin. He was looking at a sergeant who had been hit, when he, too, was shot.”.

His brother although not a resident of Uttoxeter was also killed. He is  record on the following page.
