Walter had served as a Territorial for many years before the war and had been instrumental in helping to shape the Battalion during their training and sailed with them for Gallipoli in July 1915. [3]
He was the leader of “C” Company, [3, 8] which supported “B” Company in the attack, [8] which was their first battle. [3]
Walter Meakin was killed during the main charge against the second Turkish positions. [3]
A comrade said the following: [8]
“I am told he was hit, but the man who saw it was hit himself later. We never found him, though we spent nights of searching.”
The fact that the eyewitness that saw him fall was himself killed meant that his body was never recovered from amongst the broken ground of Gallipoli. [3]
