We do not know when Harry enlisted, but we do know that he was reported to be home on leave in January 1917. [3a] We also know that he had been sent a Christmas parcel from Uttoxeter during the Christmas of 1916-1917. [3a]

It seems all the more tragic when you realise that Harry died a month after the war had ended. He was one of the victims of the Spanish Flu epidemic.

News of his death came as a shock to his wife because although she had known that he had influenza, she had not realised that he was seriously ill. [1b]

He left a widow and two children. [1b]

At the time of his death, two of his brothers were in the army. Tom had been a prisoner in Germany and was now at home on leave. [1]

By this time, Patrick had already been killed. [1b]

His sister was Miss A[nnie]. Moore, of 13 James Street, Uttoxeter. [3]

The CWGC database gives Harry’s grave as Grave III. A. 30. in Caudry British Cemetery.
