William’s Medal Card⁵ tells a very unpleasant tale of William being unjustly accused of cowardice. It shows that on 5^th January 1918 he was labelled as a deserter and his medals were forfeited. This was corrected at a later date and the forfeiture was cancelled when he was officially classed as ‘Presumed Dead’. He was then awarded his medals again.
