He was a Uttoxeter Territorial and an employee at the Leighton Ironworks before enlisting in the local company soon after the outbreak of hostilities. He came to Uttoxeter from London in about 1913 and resided for a while with Mrs. Robert Miller of Bradley Street.

At the time of his death he had not been married long, and he left a widow and baby.

He was killed by a shell at Messines.
