We do not know when Charles joined up, but his Medal Card shows that he was awarded the 1915 Star[4]. The qualifying date is given as 26th August 1915 and France as the Theatre of War[4].

He was acting as Lieutenant at the time that his platoon 'went over' on the first day of the Somme[3a]. He was killed by shell-fire at Thiepval[3a].

At the time of his death he was reported as missing[3a], and it was not until April 1917 that his wife received official confirmation that he had died[3a].
