Before the war he served in the 5th Royal Lancaster Regiment Territorial Force. [1]

Robert joined the Manchester Police Force on 8/1/1913 [1]. He enlisted in the Grenadier Guards with a number of his colleagues. We know that he was in the army by May 1915, as given by the photograph below:

He and his wife (nee Miss Mellor) [3b] married at Uttoxeter after he enlisted[3b].

He was described as 'a fine specimen of an Englishman'[3b].

He was wounded about 12 months before he was killed[3b], but on that occasion he recovered and returned to the front[3b].

At the end of October 1916 the Uttoxeter Advertiser published an article[3a] saying that he was reported missing. It was not until the end of January 1917 that his death was made official[3b].

The Uttoxeter Advertiser roll of honour says that he died at Les Boeufs, France.

He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
