The Uttoxeter Advertiser says that he enlisted in November 1915. The National Archives contain pension records for a Reginald Sampson who came from Uttoxeter and who joined up in November 1915, which is consistent with this. However, he was discharged from the army on medical grounds in February 1916. Are they the same man?
The Soldiers Died in the Great War database contains two Reginald Sampsons, but neither record mentions any former service that would link back to the man of the pension records or directly to Uttoxeter.
The CWGC database lists the same two men, but, as with the SDGW records, neither record mentions any link with Uttoxeter or records former service.
We find ourselves wondering if Reginald Sampson is the man who was discharged on medical grounds, but has been included on the Town’s War Memorial because of service of a non-military nature? Henry Abud, John Collyer and Christine Stewart all appear on the memorial because they died while serving in a civilian capacity. Perhaps Reginald Sampson’s story is similar?
Further research is needed.
