Lathroppe’s Almshouses in Carter Street, Uttoxeter, where his mother lived |
Before the war he was employed in Messrs. Orme and Sons' upholstering department1b, 6 and described as a quiet and well-respected young man1b.
We do not know when he joined up, but we do know that he was serving on the Western Front during the winter of 1914-15. He sent a letter to the Uttoxeter Advertiser1a, 6 acknowledging a Christmas parcel that had been sent by the townsfolk.
He was killed in action at Mouquet Farm1d (the Tommies called it ‘Mucky Farm’), Pozieres, in the Somme area.
He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
This shows the area surrounding Mouquet Farm and gives an idea of how little cover was available. The farm had been reduced to rubble. when Charles was there |
Thiepval Memorial |
This memorial notice was posted in the Uttoxeter Advertiser1d to mark the first anniversary of his death |
