Lathroppe’s Almshouses in Carter Street, Uttoxeter, where his mother lived

Before the war he was employed in Messrs. Orme and Sons' upholstering department^{1b, 6} and described as a quiet and well-respected young man^1b.

We do not know when he joined up, but we do know that he was serving on the Western Front during the winter of 1914-15. He sent a letter to the Uttoxeter Advertiser^{1a, 6} acknowledging a Christmas parcel that had been sent by the townsfolk.

He was killed in action at Mouquet Farm^1d (the Tommies called it ‘Mucky Farm’), Pozieres, in the Somme area.

He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
