Before the war he had been employed in the fitting shop of the Leighton Ironworks and he enlisted on the outbreak of war.
The Uttoxeter Advertiser reported that he had enlisted some time between the 10th and 17th of March 1917[1a]. This clearly cannot be right because his medal card[6] shows that he was awarded the 1915 Star. The Medal Card says that the Theatre of War in which he first served was France[6] and he entered into that service on 2nd April 1915[6].
He went to France with the Army Service Corps[1b, 4]. Later, he returned to England and went through a period of training with an infantry battalion[1b].
In November 1916 he was attached to a Border Regiment and went to France again[1b, 4].
He went missing on 10th July 1917[1b] and it wasn't until the end of July 1918 that his wife was officially informed that he had been killed[1d].
He had served with the army for over two years before his death.
He left a widow and 2 children[1d].
The Roll of Honour says that he died in Nieuport, France.
He has no known grave.
These memorial notices[1f, 1g] were posted in the Uttoxeter Advertiser in July 1919 to mark the second anniversary of his death |
