William was killed at Achiet-le-Grand, which is a village 19 kilometres south of Arras.

His parents heard of his death on 11th September 1918 when they received a letter from Lieutenant R. Morgan[1c]. The Uttoxeter Advertiser quoted part of the letter[1c], in which it was said that William had been respected by the whole company as a brave man and a keen soldier.

He had been in the army for about 20 months, twelve of which had been at the front[1c]. He had spent a short time at the Italian front before being transferred to France[1c].

William is buried in the Plot IV of the Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont[3].

The name for the Adanac Military Cemetery was formed by reversing the name "Canada", because a large proportion of its graves belong to Canadian soldiers. It was created after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields and small cemeteries surrounding Miraumont and Courcelette. William died at Achiet-le-Petit, which is only about 3km away from the cemetery.
