The details above relate to the only HG Smith on the CWGC register who died on or anywhere near 21st September 1916. This date is given by the Uttoxeter Advertiser’s Roll of Honour. He also has the right Christian name and rank as the details on the Uttoxeter Advertiser's Roll of Honour.

Henry was well-known in Uttoxeter[3a] and enlisted at the end of August, 1914[1]. He went to France on the 21st of January 1915[1, 3a].

During the time that he was on active service he went through some very fierce fighting, but beyond a slight injury that did not necessitate his leaving the firing line, he came through unscathed until he was killed[3a].

The Uttoxeter Advertiser’s Roll of Honour says that he died of wounds at Ginchy.

He had five brothers serving in the army, two of whom were lying seriously wounded in hospital at the time of his death[1, 3a]. We do not know whether or not any of them also died during the war.
