Before the war David was a Farm Hand for Mr. Ginnis, of Kniveton, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire[2a, 3].
David was posted as missing on 12th October 1917, but it was not until August 1918 that his mother was given official confirmation of his death. The official date for his death was given as 12th October 1917.
David Wheat has no known grave and his name is recorded on a panel in the Tyne Cot Memorial. The Memorial Panels run along the walls that surround the back of Tyne Cot Cemetery. | |
The Tyne Cot Cemetery and the other cemeteries in the Ypres area contain many graves of unidentified soldiers. David may be one of them, or he may still lie where he fell, somewhere beneath the surrounding fields |
|
His brother-in-law was serving in France when news of David’s death was received[3] but we have not identified him yet.
