Most of the information that we know about Alfred Wheeler comes from his pension records in the National Archives.
Alfred lived at 21 Hockley Road, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire[2a].
He was 5 ft 9 ˝ inches tall[2a], had a fresh complexion[2a] and blue eyes[2a].
His har was dark brown[2a].
His occupation was Farm Servant[2a].
Alfred was discharged from the army on 28th August 1917[2a] at Lichfield. He was 24 years old at the time of his discharge[2a].
His chest measurement was given as 38 ˝ inches[2a] and his chest expansion 3 inches[2a].
He was discharged because he was no longer fit for active service[2a]. His discharge papers stated that he had borne a fair character throughout the whole of his Military Service[2a]. His condition was attributable to service during the war[2a].
The only other information that has come to light to date is a brief entry in the Uttoxeter Advertiser’s Roll of Honour, which says that he died in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Mansfield on the 26th of November 1918[1a]. The bitter irony of this must have hit his family hard because it was less than a month after the end of the war.
It also suggests that he lived for 15 months after discharge. Presumably he died of illness related to his disability?
The SDGW database contains no records for any A. Wheelers who died on or near the 26th of November 1918.
We can find no matches on the CWGC register either.
